5 Things You Wanna Know About Veganism

Yesterday I totally forgot about the international vegan day (the same way I totally forgot about Halloween this year) so I'm posting this article today. For all of you who consider becoming vegan - I have few things you should get ready for ..

Vegan Doesn't Mean Healthy
Before you decide to become vegan, I'm gonna tell you something - being vegan doesn't mean being healthy. There is a lot of healthy vegan food, the vegan diet is actually made mostly of fresh fruit, vegetables and legumes .. and there is also a lot of junk food you're gonna have to give up (like milk chocolate, Nutella, hamburgers, milk shakes etc.) BUT! If you don't follow strict plant-based vegan diet (= never eat processed food), the oily fries, chips, and tons of white bread still stay vegan.

Tip: Don't think that if you're vegan, you can eat anything. You can't. Consider Plant-Based veganism or at least try to avoid rafined sugar, white flour, colorants, preservatives and products with GMO.

People Won't Agree With You
If you tell someone you eat nor meat neither dairy and eggs, some people will think you eat just grass and leaves. So if you consider becoming vegan, get ready for negative reactions of people around you. Especially the visits of your grandparents may be hard. They are probably gonna tell you that "doctors in the radio said that eating meat (and the dairy and eggs, omg!) is not healthy" or they're gonna tell you that "these extremistic diets are wrong".

Tip: read books, articles, watch movies, youtube videos - and get enough arguments !

It Is Hard To Eat Out
Another thing you should be ready for is that eating our will be harder. Ignore the fact that you're eating clean and you never visit KFC or McDonald's. When you travel or you're just out and you're starving, you may end up in fastfood. If you're vegetarian it's already pretty hard but there are still some things you can beat your hunger with. But what vegan can order? Honestly - almost nothing. The butter or eggs are in almost every meal.

Tip: Prepare your meals at home or check the internet and look for vegan restaurant in the neighbourhood or the place you're going to :)

Giving Up Dairy
I used to love dairy so I was quite suprised how easy it was to give them up. I'm not talking about products which contain few percents or milk, it's more complicated to give the up .. But drinking milk, eating cheese and butter is really not as hard as I thought.

Tip: You can replace cheese with tofu or cream made of blended nuts, replace dairy milk for cooking/baking with plant-based milk and try chickpea hummus or nut butter instead or normal butter.

It Is More expensive
You can find some articles on the internet where people disagree that veganims - or any "healthy lifestyle" - is more expensive. Unfortunatelly I have to agree with this. Plant-based milk is much more expensive than dairy milk, nuts which appear in almost every second vegan recipe are not cheap at all and you also consume more food as vegan overall. But ..

Tip: 1. Buy seasonal fruit and vegetables or fruit and vegetables that are cheaper because they're over ripe - for example ripe bananas and perfect for baking or making sweet smoothies :)
2. Make homemade nut butter and plant-based milk. You'll save money and also you wont consume all the unhealthz ingredients which are put in some vegan products.
