What I've Lost and Gained From Meditation

Buddha was asked, "What have you gained from meditation?", he replied "Nothing! However, let me tell you what I have lost: anger, anxiety, depression, insecurity, fear of old age and death."

If someone told me last year that he/she meditated, I would think that they're awfully religious. Well .. quite a lot of things changed during last year. I changed a lot. And meditation is simply part of my life now. In this post I'd like to show you some positive effects of meditation, tell you why I meditate and why you should try that too :)

Types of meditation

There are many types of meditation, for example:

Mindfulness meditation

  • Concentrates on your body parts and your breath. It helps you to understand the signals of your body and helps you learn to live fully in the present
  • You can meditate on your own or you can use mindfulness guided meditation ↓. If you decide to meditate on your own, just sit comfortably - you should sit up with straight back - and just start breathing and cocentrate on each part of your body for a while - you can read more about how to practise mindfulness meditation here.

Guided meditation

  • This one is great for beginners. It's also useful for days when your mind is full of annoying thoughts and you can't just sit and concentrate on your breath . During this meditation you listen to an audio where someone tells you how you should breathe, what you should concentrate on etc. Your task is to listen carefully and follow the instructions.
  • You can find a lot of these meditations on youtube or spotify. I recommend meditations by Boho Beautiful channel- she has beautiful calming voice and I absolutely love her meditations. Also I can recommend the whole Guided Meditation playlist and Self Love Meditation by Glen Smith on Spotify.

Benefits

Meditation is mainly about calming and controlling your mind. Due to controlling our thoughts, we can stop caring about those which destroy our life and focus more on positive, creative thoughts which bring only the nice things into our lifes.

Meditation reduces:
  • insomnia
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • pain
  • negative thoughts
  • mood swings ...
... and increases:
  • concentration
  • creativity
  • productivity
  • resistance to stress ...
There are more benefits of meditation of course. For example my skin got much better because of meditation. How are these two things connected? Skin problems are often caused by stress. I don't mean the stress before exams or before important meeting etc. I mean those days when my mind is full of annoying thoughts, when I feel like I must do something but I don't really know what ... and my mind is so crowded that I'd like to take all the thought and throw them into a dustbin. And meditation helps me with this kind of stress a lot. Also I'm much more positive, my mood is better and I don't suffer from mood swings as much as I did. I don't even get angry so often and when I do so, it doesn't take a long time to get rid of those feelings. So every time I don't feel good, I just sit on my bed, close my eyes ... and breath. Simple as that.
