Few years ago I used to think that meditation is only for Buddhist monks in Himalayas. Now, when someone says meditation, I imagine myself sitting on the bed with my headphones on, enjoying my little moment of peace and relaxation. How I started with meditation and what are my tips for beginners?

My story
I first "became acquainted" with meditation during psychology course I attended two years ago. There was one lesson focused on the topic of mindfulness (which was a word I had never heard before)
For those, who are not familiar with this topic, mindfulness is basially the state of conscious presence. There are many way you can practise mindfulness. Jst by enjoying simple activites like eating, showering, cleaning ... you can "learn" to be fully present in every moment of your life.
But the thing that really motivated me to start meditating was Osho's dynamic meditation at Yoga festival in Ostrava. During this mediation I first experiences the "moment without mind". For a moment, there were no thoughts in my brain. Just calmness and silence.
How to begin?
Meditation is a way to get control over your thoughts and emotions. It helps you to relax and when practising regularly, you may get even much more benefits - you may explore your inner world and learn more about yourself, you may start feeling the energies around you and so on. But how do you start?
Don't rush and don't feel bad if you're not able to clear your mind immediatelly. Even though I've been practising meditation for few months now, I still have days when I can't get rid of all the thoughts and I'm not able to create a second without the chatter in my mind. Sometimes I give up and I decide to do something else than meditation, because I'm just not able to focus. But usually when you get through this stage, where you want to give up, open your eyes and end the session, you then actually get into the state of meditation.
So give yourself time to relax, to calm down and to learn to let go of the thought and emotions ...
Find a place, where you won't be disturbed. It's great to have your special place for meditation - a corner in your room, a place somewhere in the nature or something like that ... but even if you don't have a place like that, don't worry! I don't even have my own room. I live with my brother in one room so in evening I tell my brother and my parents "I'm going to meditate, please don't disturb me". I sit down on my bed or on the floor, I take my headphones (sometimes I light up a candle or a scented stick) and I create my own little space where I can relax, turn off my mind and leave all the worries and negative thoughts behind. You can meditate anywhere. Sitting on your bed, on a beach or when sitting in a bus ... it really doesn't matter. Just close your eyes for a moment, focus on your breath, observe your thoughts but do not follow them. Just watch them from a distance, observe the emotions that follow the thoughts, but don't let them control you.
Some people like to meditate alone, some people like to have someone to guide them. When I'm relaxed, I'm able to just sit and meditate on my own. When I have too many thought in my mind and I can't just focus on my breathing, I choose guided meditate. Here are few of my favourite meditations and youtube channel where you can get the inspiration :) Namaste ♥
