Vegetarianism May Do More Harm Than Meat-eating

When I stopped eating meat, I thought I'm saving the world. That thanks to my effort, some animals will have pretty and peaceful life. Well ... Unfortunatelly, it's not that true. In fact, vegetarianism may sometimes do more harm that eating meat.

Is vegetarianism helping the animals? If you stop eating meat and you increase your consumption of dairy, eggs, whey protein etc. ... then it's not helpful at all. In some way, animals raised for meat have sometimes a bit better life than the other farm animals. They live usually in dark places, they don't get much of the natural food, they are not treated well and after few months or years, they're killed. But it may be worse. Dairy cows are destined to be repeatedly raped, to give birth to baby calves and then become literally milk machines. If a male calf is born, it's going immediatelly to the veal farm. It doesn't matter if you buy milk from a big factory farm or a small family farm - male calves are unwanted there, so they have to be slaughtered. Also the dairy cows don't live a long, happy life - after few years, they are so exhausted that they can't produce milk anymore and they're slaughtered as well. So in my opinion, there is no ethical way to get dairy.

If a person becomes vegetarian from ethical reasons, because he/she doesn't want to support suffering and killing of animals, it's worth considering the elimination of the dairy profucts as well. Just by not eating two cups of yoghurt, many slices of cheese, animal-based protein etc. every day, you can make a big change in the life of many animals.

Now, what about the eggs? In my opinion, it's okay to buy eggs from a small farm, where the people care about their hens with love and respect. But there's one question as well - imagine a hen giving birth to the little chicken - there will always be some male chickens and female chickens. If the farmer doesn't need the male chickens, what is he going to do with them? Use them for meat? Kill them right after the birth? ...

In terms of the eggs you buy in the supermarket .. they usually come from the hens who have been held in a small, dark places, they usually never see the sunlight and the male chickens are killed right aftter they're born - either milled in a grinder or suffocated in garbage bag. Personally, I would probably never eat eggs and honey fro mthe supermarket anymore.

Altough I would be happy is all the animals were free and living their life in the best conditions, which were created for them by nature ... but I feel like sometimes vegetarians can sometimes hurt the animals more than meat eaters. If you eat meat few times a month, you buy the meat fro ma small farm .. maybe you're helping the animals more than a person, who doesn't eat meat, but eats enormous amount of other animal products every day.

So how about myself? I haven't been eating meat for about a year. Also I haven't drunk a glass of milk in about a year. I do eat dairy products like ice cream, cheese or dairy chocolate from time to time but I'm trying to limit my consumption as much as possible. I definitely don't include these products to my diet to get some protein, calcium or something like that.
